Driving health care equity in Canada through data and digital innovation

Since 1994, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has worked to provide comparable and actionable information that drives improvements in health care delivery, system performance and population health across the care continuum.
As Canada’s demographics and needs evolve, so must our approach. The convergence of health data and digital innovation offers a transformative opportunity: to build health systems that truly serve all Canadians with fairness and accessibility.
How do we make this vision a reality?
Our path is clear—Canada needs timely, standardized data that’s relevant and contextualized. Decision-makers seek information rich in context for making swift, evidence-based decisions. Most importantly, they want tools that address systemic inequities, bridge care gaps and reach communities that have long been overlooked.
We understand that every dollar spent in health care must yield smarter outcomes with greater fairness. Canadians expect health systems that provide culturally safe care and honour all identities and experiences. They want ownership of their health data— available to both providers and themselves—in formats that promote transparency and shared decision-making.
At CIHI, we’re undertaking meaningful transformation. We’re modernizing our operations, strengthening partnerships and investing in technologies that make health data more current, connected and usable. Our aim is to equip health leaders, policy-makers, patients, providers and researchers with insights for prompt and fair action.
Through collaboration across jurisdictions and diverse organizations, we’re building a robust, people-centred data ecosystem with equity at its core. This ensures decisions stem from evidence rather than assumptions, leading to improved care, better access and enhanced health outcomes for everyone.
The path ahead is ambitious but necessary. Together with partners and health system leaders from across the country, we’re reimagining how data and digital solutions serve all Canadians.
I invite you to participate in all that the conference has to offer and hope that you will join me at our Host Plenary Session: Health Equity — The Role of Digital and Data, where I’ll participate in a panel with digital health leaders to explore how data and digital tools can create the equitable health outcomes that Canadians deserve.
