Demonstrating investment to impact: The eHealth Interoperability Showcase provides attendees with a clear view of how interoperable systems get the maximum benefits from our health information technology investments.
What is the Interoperability Showcase?
The Showcase is a demonstration of market ready healthcare applications using common standards to exchange information. Clinical scenarios are used to guide attendees through a tour of interoperable systems allowing participants to play the role of the patient and see how pertinent information is shared between collaborating systems to support new models of care.
What’s New This Year?
Building on the success of last years’ showcase, the Interoperability Showcase 2010 will demonstrate how our investments in interoperability are positively impacting improvements to patient care. Conference participants will be able to participate in broader clinical scenarios that
- Make the pan-Canadian EHR real by demonstrating components of Infoway’s EHRS blueprint exchanging data with point of service applications.
- Demonstrate the exchange of information between applications across the continuum of care. Allow attendees to delve deeper into additional application features at the vendors’ trade show floor booths.
More specifically, participants will be able to participate in the following clinical scenarios:
1) Chronic Disease Management
2) eprescription and edispensing
3) Radiology
4) Telehealth
5) Maternal Health - Labour Delivery

Why is this important?
Standards form the foundation of interoperable systems. These standards allow systems to exchange pertinent information which is used to provide:
- Improved system functionality such as decision support, drug interaction alerts, and reminders.
- Increased patient safety and quality of care.
Interoperability is vital to the improvement of patient care and the future of health care innovations. Not only are interoperable systems an opportunity for better care, they also save money. According to Canada Health Infoway President Richard Alvarez, studies have shown that the costs benefits of implemented electronic health records are anywhere between six and seven billion dollars annually.
It’s easy to state the benefits of interoperability, but much harder to give people an opportunity to experience the benefits first hand and actually ‘see’ how the systems work together. Furthermore, a system ‘visualizer’ allows participants to see how the back-end infrastructure connects to the point of care applications.
Imagine if... you visit your family doctor with concerns due to feelings of excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and blurred vision.
What if... your essential personal health information was accessible to all your healthcare providers, wherever and whenever you come into contact with the health care system:
- Your Family Doctor could check his or her EMR to obtain your medical history, update both the EMR and SHR with records of the new symptoms, and order lab tests to confirm a potential chronic disease condition.
- A Lab Technologist could send the test results to a Lab Repository for your Family Doctor to instantly retrieve from his or her EMR.
- A Specialist, referred to by your family doctor, could review the lab results and other pertinent health information to confirm your diagnosis of Type II Diabetes and create an effective care plan.
- You could check your PHR to see the prescribed care plan in order to better manager your chronic disease situation and update your personal health record for future reference and knowledge.
- A Health Decision Support Expert could check their Data Warehouse to analyze your anonymized clinical information amongst the rest of the population for secondary health system management uses.
Why Imagine? Attend the Interoperability Showcase and experience interoperability first hand!
