Apps Challenge
Connected Care for Consumers and Clinicians
e-Health 2012 is pleased to announce the APPS CHALLENGE!
This new innovation challenge will engage students, Health Informatics (HI) and other related academic programs, CIO’s, clinicians, vendors, and e-Health entrepreneurs in:
- Undertaking real life design and development projects
- Engaging with a top level network of HI professionals leading e-Health in Canada
- Building a community and future generation of innovators.
e-Health 2012 Apps Challenge Theme:
Connected Care for Consumers and Clinicians
Application Challenge:
Design, develop and demonstrate a consumer or clinician application that contributes to improving health care continuity, connectivity and information sharing using Information Technology. The application will specifically be usable by clinicians and/or patients at a point of health care service or in the everyday aspects of needing or accessing health care.
Apps Challenge Parameters and Process:
- This Apps Challenge is open to any active student registered (full or part time) with an accredited university or college
- Teams from multiple institutions may join together into one team
- The size of teams is open
- Each team is to produce a different application
- More than one team can come from a single academic institution
- Each team to develop “an application”:
- Mobile or desktop-based
- That is needed by the consumer (patient and/or provider) market and the health system
- Team retains their intellectual property (IP)
Process Specifics:
- An Application from each team is required to pre-qualify, with assessment and qualification by a team of judges (CIO, clinician and vendor)
- Application process includes:
- a maximum 3 page paper summarizing health business problem being addressed, application need, application relationship to theme (Connected Care for Consumers and Clinicians), application requirements and high level specifications, value to the consumer and/or clinicians, innovative contribution and value
- Identification of all team members
- Identification of team technical and software development strengths

- Applications are to be provided by email with accompanying paper and application form, to be sent to the e-Health 2012 Conference Manager by March 2, 2012
Qualified teams to:
- Receive design approval from Judges by March 30 and must complete design and development by May 25, just prior to e-Health 2012
- Qualified teams (minimum one member per team) to attend e-Health:
- Bring necessary laptops or mobile devices for demonstrating application
- Setup their table top booth on the Sunday
- Undertake demonstrations in Apps Challenge Centre, on exhibition floor during all exhibit hours
Challenge Presentation and Winner Process
- Each team to have at least one member attend and present the innovative application at the e-Health 2012 Battle of the Apps (3 minutes each) to a team of judges from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Tuesday afternoon in the Exhibition Theatre. (JUDGES to be announced in February 2012).
- Voting on the winning app will be done by the Battle of the Apps judges (50%) and by attendees at the conference (via text voting) by Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
- Criteria for judging will include applicability and value, usability and creativity
- The Winner and runner up are to be announced and each awarded a cash prize at closing plenary, noon Wednesday.
- A table, electrical access and internet access will be provided at the Conference
- One member from each team will be provided a complimentary exhibit registration and $1000 for travel expenses (if living outside the conference city of Vancouver).
